Shortly after securing its initial round of funding, US software company Cien launches an office in Spain. Cien’s app provides artificial intelligence to companies looking to increase their sales force productivity. The company recently established a subsidiary in Spain and hired key engineering personnel.

“When it comes to engineering, Barcelona boasts a world-class data science community that is at the forefront of statistical science,” highlights Dr. Christian Brownlees, Professor of Economics and Business at Universitat Pompeu Fabra and the Barcelona Graduate School of Business.

“We chose Barcelona in part thanks to its openness in regards to foreign investment. We received valuable help in establishing our Spanish subsidiary from Barcelona Activa’s Business Landing Services,” says Käll. “In the last few months we’ve created over 15 jobs in Barcelona. Our aim is to hire close to 100 employees in the region by end of next year.”

“Cien’s commitment to Barcelona confirms the city’s position as an attractive destination for foreign companies, whether they’re searching for talent, looking to place their research and innovation centers, or access to the European market,” says Mònica Madrigal, Head of Barcelona Activa’s Business Landing Services.

Cien’s CEO Rob Käll is no stranger to entrepreneurship, nor to Barcelona. He’s already founded three internet software companies, all based out of Miami. He first came to Spain in 2014 to help a US multinational company acquire a company in Barcelona. “I instantly fell in love with the energy of the people. I decided that when the timing was right for my next startup, Spain would be involved, in some shape or form.”

Like many of its peers born in the digital age, Cien was designed with a global and diverse vision from the outset. The company’s founders hail from the US and Sweden. Its subsidiary in Spain boasts 11 different nationalities. To support its growth, Cien is hiring data scientists, software developers, product designers and customer success professionals. “We are hiring the highest quality employees and working with the sales teams of the future,” said co-founder Margot Carter, who also sits on public and private company boards.

Cien is working with early adopters in Spain and the US to incorporate their thinking in the design and development of Cien’s product and technology. Cien’s app is currently available upon invitation only.
