The Data Exec Series: Your CRM Captures What Happened. AI Explains Why It Happened
By Gertrude Van Horn, CIO & SVP, Cien.ai
“CRM records the sequence of events. AI reveals the forces behind them, turning sales history into practical intelligence leaders can use to improve future outcomes.“
– Rob Kall, Co-Founder & CEO, Cien.ai
Your CRM Is an Excellent Historian
Your CRM captures an enormous amount of information about your go-to-market organization. It can tell you when a deal was opened, when it moved to a new stage, which rep owned it, how much it was worth, and whether it was eventually won or lost.
That information is useful. But it is also incomplete.
A CRM can show that a deal stalled in the proposal stage. It usually cannot explain why. It can show that one rep consistently outperforms another. It rarely identifies the behaviors driving that difference. It can show that a forecast changed three times during the quarter, but it does not reveal the underlying signals that made the original forecast unreliable.
Moving from Descriptive Analytics to Predictive Intelligence
This is where AI changes the conversation.
By analyzing CRM records alongside activities, rep behavior, account characteristics, deal progression, pricing patterns, and historical outcomes, AI can identify relationships that are difficult to uncover through dashboards alone.
Cien.ai can help explain:
- Why certain deals stalled
- Why some reps consistently win
- Why particular industries convert at higher rates
- Why specific pricing approaches fail
- Why sales forecasts drift over time
Instead of simply seeing that an opportunity stopped moving, leaders can identify the factors associated with the stall. Perhaps buyer engagement declined, the rep skipped an important discovery step, the opportunity entered the pipeline too early, or the pricing structure did not match similar successful deals.
The objective is not to replace human judgment. It is to give leaders stronger evidence before they make decisions.
With a properly calibrated model, the system automatically flags “zombie deals” that look good on paper but are mathematically dying. This gives RevOps and Finance a single, objective dataset to rely on.
What Does Success Look Like?
Success means moving from “What happened?” to “Why did it happen, and what should we do next?”
Sales leaders can coach reps based on specific behaviors rather than general impressions. Finance teams can understand why forecasts are changing instead of merely documenting the variance. Marketing teams can focus investment on industries and segments with a higher propensity to convert. Pricing teams can identify where discounting helps and where it simply reduces margin.
Most importantly, the CRM becomes more than a system of record. With Cien.ai, it becomes the foundation for a system of intelligence.
The result is a more informed revenue organization—one that can recognize problems earlier, make better decisions, and improve future outcomes instead of repeatedly analyzing the past.
